Characteristics of a Novice Teacher

To me, finding good artifacts that fall under the characteristics is difficult. But, I thought characteristic #4 and #6 were good characteristics to discuss.

Characteristic #4 states:"We believe the novice teacher should be a facilitator of learning for all students. " From almost every one of my education classes, we have talked about how to differentiate learning for all students. I am a firm believer that every student is different, not every student learns the same, and just because one lesson works for one class, does not mean it is going to work for all. There is no "one size fits all" in education. Almost every single lesson I teach, I give them options as to how to accomplish it. My options would include: writing on the smartboard, writing on the blackboard, working in groups, working individually, writing the sentences out, or saying them out loud. I always ask students for their opinion about how they think I should teach the lesson. I like to hear what they have to say so that they are giving opinions and having choices in the class.

Characteristic #6 states: "We believe that the novice teacher should have in-depth knowledge of content."I think this characteristic is very important because I believe that you cannot be a great educator if you do not have in-depth knowledge of their content. Students will not feel comfortable in a classroom if their teacher is not comfortable with the subject. If I got thrown into a Math or Science class, I would freak out. I would have no clue what to do and that would greatly effect how my students viewed me and their education. Students look up to teachers more than we realize, and if they see how good we are at something, they are going to want to be good at it also. I know that my students love to correct me on something that I say or write, if they call me out for something I did wrong, I give them a bonus point for paying attention and knowing the error and how to correct it. One of my artifacts that I have for this would me my thematic units from a few of my classes. It has plenty of lesson plans with authentic artifacts and differentiated lesson for everybody.

  1. Cassie - I definitely agree with you that it is hard to find artifacts to fall in each category. We've done so much work over the past couple years that it is hard to really identify one specific piece and incorporate it into something that basically decides our future! It's really stressful trying to meet all the standards for this, but I know you'll be able to and you'll do great! :)

By including a differentiated instruction artifact like you said you wil for #4 I think you will show your care for diversity as well as knowledge of pedagogy. Good choice!
